Exploring the Solar Plexus Chakra: Shaping Our Identity and True Self

Introduction to the Solar Plexus Chakra

The Solar Plexus Chakra is the seat of personal power and will. It is from this energy centre that we're able to make decisions and have the courage and confidence to trust and follow our 'gut instincts'. This Chakra brings with it the strength and determination to make changes within our lives along with the ambition and drive to set intentions and manifest transformational change into our lives. Clarity, intelligence and the ability to focus on tasks and study are made possible through the Solar Plexus Chakra.

It's through the Solar Plexus Chakra that we feel our strength and power. Through this powerful energy centre we're able to bring through protection and cleansing to our other Chakras. If our energy is feeling depleted from a person, experience or environment we are in, it's possible that we will first feel it within the Solar Plexus Chakra via subtle signs such as, a lack of mental strength or focus that can lead us to question our decisions and instincts. The strength that is held in this energy centre also encourages us to disengage from low vibrational activities or relationships if they are not serving our highest good.

The Shaping of Our Identity

Characteristics of the Solar Plexus Chakra include confidence, personal power, freedom of choice, and individuality. The Solar Plexus is also related to personal identity and we enter the developmental stage of the Solar Plexus Chakra from the ages of 14 - 21 years old. It's at this time that we begin defining our identity. As teenagers we can create a lot of push back and pull within ourselves and our external environment and relationships. . This push and pull effect generally takes place around the ages of 14 to 17 years old. It’s at this time that we are fighting to establish who we are in terms of our identity, our being and our ‘fight’ for freedom of choice, to do what we want, when we want, regardless of whether it's viewed as beneficial or detrimental.

The establishment of our identity at this stage of our lives is often formed on prior conditioning and life experiences. How we were brought up, our environment and the influences surrounding us all play a part in the shaping of our identity and also includes the expectations and programming placed on us by the schooling system, along with societal conditioning.

When focusing on a Chakra, we are often guided to go to the previous Chakra in order to identify current imbalances. Therefore, when looking at the Solar Plexus Chakra and the shaping of our identity, we are called to look at the walls of separation which would have occurred or began forming from 7 to 14 years old.

Generally, life can be fairly free-flowing up until the ages of 11/12 years old. Suddenly children are slammed with rules, regulations, and rigid structural policies that the (British) education system imposes on them and which they are expected to adhere to. They are restricted, prevented, and even punished for wanting to access things which as adults, we see as basic human rights and fundamental civil liberties, such as going to the toilet when you want, speaking and giving your opinion, eating and drinking when you  choose to.

Colonial structures and institutions have a mandate to make everyone conform to the same behaviour and a set way of being and doing. It does not want our individuality unless it is benefiting the system it has created. Governing structures, assert their authority to ensure they have power over the person, disempowering them in the process.

Overcoming Lack of Trust and Self-Doubt

When we feel disempowered, and if the sense of disempowerment goes on for long enough, it can embed itself in our consciousness, leading us to believe we have no freedom and no ability to make our own choices. This has an impact on our confidence and feeds into the wall of separation held within the Solar Plexus Chakra: Lack of Trust and Self-doubt.

The walls of separation are imprinted on the psyche. The psyche is the totality of our own mind, spirit, and soul and also that of the collective consciousness. As we enter the Solar Plexus Chakra, we see the effect that the imprint of the psyche has on us psychologically. The programming that takes place when we are young people, particularly in Western and Global North society, impacts the establishment of our personal identity.

The Solar Plexus Chakra also shows us how the ego is formed. Duality is a big aspect of this. When we think about the word duality, we are guided to opposites, the energy of opposition. If we begin forming our identity around the ages of 14-21 years, there is a potential for some of us that our identity is formed through a sense of rebellion, as a result of what we see as the curtailing our freedom and our right to choose.

As an adult, the question to ask is, if the basis of my identity has been formed through rebellion, is it really my truth?

We can  view the opposite of rebellion as duty. It’s likely that the majority of people are conditioned to duty. It’s a collective conditioning, ensuring that people follow the rules and dictates without questioning if they are for our highest good and wellbeing. We could even question if duty is an indication that the collective programming has worked? The majority of people will conform. They will study or follow a life path that is expected of them rather than that which fills their heart with joy and passion. Even if we’re not visibly pressured by anyone or anything external to us, it’s the programmed human condition to go along with the majority, the acceptable narrative or whatever general consensus seems to be most appropriate, and live our lives according to that.

Remembering our True Identity

The Solar Plexus holds the essence of our true self. Our true self always remains whole and intact. Our Solar Plexus Chakra is the home of truth, freedom, and beauty. Not surface level beauty, but the beauty of life, the beauty that freedom and choice aligns us with.

Within the Solar Plexus Chakra is a jewel. That jewel is our truth.  Our jewel of truth is not affected by pain, loss or trauma. It is the walls of separation and the energy that they create psychologically that causes our jewel of truth to be hidden. The walls of separation prevent us from being able to grasp hold of our truth, we are unable to bring it forward. Many of us will go through life not knowing our truth, not knowing who we are, and living under a false identity. Our personal truth will remain hidden.

There is a sense of homecoming as we open the door to our truth. We are able to begin the process of defining our sense of self. Stepping into our personal power, we may embody the archetype of the warrior, standing up for freedom of ourselves and others in a way that is unconditional and selfless, without needing validation from external factors to prove our worthiness.

As we anchor our personal identity into the true nature of ourselves and who we are, the gift of acceptance comes through. We recognise that the truth is we are worthy of love and respect. As we honour our worthiness we are able to enter a state of inner peace, and that inner peace enables us to generate peace for those around us, the collective and the Earth.
